At the Seventh Commission Meeting (COMM7), held in the Netherlands, in January 2019, the Government of Chile offered to provide a compliance professional to the SPRFMO Secretariat, in order to help strengthen the compliance and VMS capabilities of the Secretariat and the Organisation.
The selection process for a VMS and Compliance Manager ended in September 2019 once the evaluation of the candidates based on the evaluation criteria took place, and the interviews were held in Chile. The selected person is Mr Pablo Ortiz Lima.
Pablo has a strong compliance background: for five years he was the Regional Head of Fisheries Inspection (Región Los Lagos) with the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) of Chile, coordinating and supervising the national fishing control plan, and monitoring and supervising vessels through the national VMS; previously he performed scientific observer duties aboard fishing vessels.
The Secretariat has warmly welcomed Pablo as the new SPRFMO VMS & Compliance Manager, who has arrived just in time to settle in the new Secretariat offices. Pablo is taking over all VMS and Compliance related matters --he can be reached at portiz@sprfmo.int.
Welcome Pablo!
