FAO International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability

2019-05-28

The outcomes will be presented at the 34th meeting of the Committee on Fisheries (FAO COFI), in July 2020.

The ‘FAO International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability: Strengthening the Science Policy nexus’, is to be held in FAO HQ, Rome, Italy, 19-21 November 2019.

This technical Symposium has been endorsed by the FAO Council (160th Session), and its outcomes will be presented at the 34th meeting of the Committee on Fisheries, in July 2020, in coincidence with the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.

The objective of this Symposium will be to identify pathways to strengthen the science and policy interplay in fisheries production, management and trade, based on solid sustainability principles for improved outcomes on the ground.

Expected outcomes include:

  • Develop and articulate a new vision for fisheries’ sustainability in the 21st century.
  • Promote strategies for synergistic actions and supportive policies, at all levels, to promote sustainable fisheries while meeting international commitments.
  • Reinforce commitments to the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and its associated instruments, leading to new FAO partnerships.
  • Assist countries at COFI 34 as they debate and consider a new COFI Sub-Committee on Fisheries Management.
