Our Ocean 2015 Conference in Chile

The second Our Ocean conference took place in Vi a del Mar, Chile, from 5 to 6 October 2015.

Vina del MarThe conference was attended by over 500 participants from over 56 countries, including 11 ministers as well as representatives of intergovernmental organisations, academia, industry and civil society.

Participants announced over 80 new initiatives on marine conservation and protection valued at more than US$2.1 billion, as well as new commitments on the protection of more than 1.9 million square kilometers of the ocean. Click here for complete list of commitments.


At the opening of the conference, Chile signed the United Nations Agreement on Straddling Fish Stock and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks (New York, 1995). Bill Mansfield, the former SPRFMO Chairperson from New Zealand, formed part of the Panel on the Law of the Sea Governance The role of the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement in the implementation of UNCLOS .

SPRFMO was represented by the Executive Secretary, Johanne Fischer, who was invited to participate in the Panel on IUU Fishing on the High Seas, a side event of the conference at the Universidad T cnica Federico Santa Mar a in Valpara so (slides of her presentation and video recording of the IUU Panel),

The 2016 Our Ocean conference will take place in the USA and the European Union announced that it will host the 2017 conference.
