SPRFMO-FIRMS Partnership Agreement signed

2019-05-14

The Agreement was signed in the framework of the 11th FIRMS Steering Committee Meeting

The South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) - Fisheries and Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS) have signed a Partnership Agreement.

The SPRFMO Data Manager, Mr. Craig Loveridge, and FAO Assistant Director-General, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, Mr. Árni Mathiesen, were the signatories on behalf of SPRFMO and FAO-FIRMS respectively. The signing ceremony took place in the framework of the 11th Session of the FIRMS Steering Committee Meeting, at the FAO Headquarters, Rome, Italy 13-14 May 2019.

SPRFMO has been an observer to the FIRMS partnership for about four years; thus, a proposal to join FIRMS was welcomed by the SPRFMO Scientific Committee (SC) in 2018. The SC issued a recommendation to join FIRMS, which the SPRFMO Commission considered and approved early this year.

With this initiative, SPRFMO aims to ensuring there is controlled dissemination of high quality and updated information for its fisheries and resources, while supporting an increased fisheries management collaboration and strengthening cooperation ties with other RFMOs and RFBs.
